Headed out from my Hotel this morning in search of a ‘true’ New Orleans treat. It was highly suggested that I try Cafe Du Monde. Cafe du Monde is an original French Market coffee stand open 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week. It serves hot beignets (french doughnuts) all day/night. Cafe du Monde is a landmark in New Orleans and has been located in the French Market since 1862. So, try I did! The menu is very limited but the place was incredibly crowded. That’s always a good sign! Sit yourself down, the menu is glued to the napkin dispenser. Beignets, coffee, oj… that’s about it. Okay, seriously I was looking for some protein. Wasn’t going to find anything substantial here. But, it was a long and very hot walk wearing jeans from the hotel (note to self – why didn’t you wear shorts???)
I wasn’t disappointed. Despite the fact that it was probably THE most unhealthy thing I’ve eaten in a long time, I did enjoy these hot freshly made beignet covered in a mountain of sugar.
To top off this delightful N’awlins experience was the jazz trumpet player on the sidewalk outside.
This is a “must do”. What’s my takeaway from this experience? Easy – a box of Cafe du Monde Beignet mix to make at home!
